As I woke up this morning, the reminder that we were given on Sunday rang as clear in my head as it did Sunday when Pastor Eric Geiger said it. It was this…
“If you are a Christian, you are a missionary.
He gave us this quote from Spurgeon…
“Every Christian is a missionary or an imposter.”
“So then, you will know them by their fruits. Not everyone who says to Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven will enter.” (Matthew 7:20-21)
Kind of cuts to the quick, doesn’t it? All fluff aside, we get straight to the core of Christianity here…the very essence of our faith.
The transforming gospel of Jesus Christ.
If, in fact, I have been transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ, I will want nothing more than to share the “recipe” for my transformation with others!
Transformation-a marked change, as in appearance or character.
If I have indeed been transformed, I will not only want to talk about it, but people will see a marked change in me. If I get an awesome haircut from a new stylist, people will ask where I got it cut, and who cut it…that is, if I don’t tell them first!!
How much more will I want to share the One who gave me a heart transplant and a life transformation? Wouldn’t I want to share the news of the One who can bring beauty from ashes and make my brokenness whole? The One who loves me unconditionally and freely offers grace to cover my sins?!!!
The all consuming love of Christ compels us to share the gospel. Jesus said in John 14:15, 21 & 23, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments…”. “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me.” “…If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.”
Jesus doesn’t have to force the ones who love Him to obey Him! It is a natural and willing…even joyful…response to His love and grace. So when He gives the command in Matthew 28:19 to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit…”, we don’t even see it as a command!! We want to tell people about the transforming gospel of Christ!!
We can’t keep the Good News in! We have a burning desire to share it.
“But if I say I’ll never mention the Lord or speak His name, His Word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!” (Jeremiah 20:9)
- Do I have a burning desire within me to share the transforming gospel of Christ with the lost world around me?
- If not…have I truly experienced the transforming, overwhelming love of Christ? Have I fully surrendered my heart and life to Him?
- Maybe I have, but I just needed a reminder today that as a follower of Christ, I am a missionary! Who do I know that is without Christ? Who can I begin to pray for? Who can I begin to build a relationship with so that I can share the love of Christ and the Good News of the gospel?
Father, You are a transformational God. You change hearts and lives! How can we hold the Good News in? How can I stay silent about Your love? Let the Good News of Your love be like a fire in my heart and in my bones so that I am worn out from trying to hold it in! Give me opportunities to share the gospel…give me words and boldness to be able to share the exciting news of the transformational gospel of Christ. In His Name, Amen!
“Let the Word of Christ richly dwell within you…”
