…when teenagers are grumpy…
…when pre-teens have attitudes…
…when little boys have broken hearts that we can’t fix…
…when toddlers are whiny…
…when husbands have bad days on the day that it’s supposed to be our bad day and we just need a shoulder.
And just when you think you’re safe at the ballpark…the loud mom behind you loudly moans in complaint when your eight-year-old misses a ball and yells “COME ON BOYS…CATCH THE BALL…”
Yeah…that’s when you nearly fly up off the bleachers and do or say something unthinkable and ungodly…but a shred of you realizes maybe you’ll see her in church so you’d better bite tongue hard and sit on those balled-up mama-bear fists or it won’t be pretty.
These are the days that stir up crazy in your soul…the days when thanks and praise are far from your mind and even if you think about it, it seems mostly impossible to utter words of thanks or praise.
These are the days that that old devil waits for…for that “opportune time” (Luke 4:13)…to drop seeds of bitterness in our hearts…to stir up unrighteous outbursts of anger…to tempt our tongue to spew venom instead of pouring healing oil. (“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18) He waits for days like these…and we can either camp here in the darkness and give him a little slice of victory…or turn and SPRINT to the Light.
~Yeah…I do mean SPRINT.~
Tired…frustrated…anxious…angry…I know I’m supposed to “give thanks in all circumstances…” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)…but really? Now?!!
“And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.”
Wait…but He knew that there would be fly-off-the-handle-moments like this…but still His Word says to represent Him AND give thanks to Him?? NOW?!! On a day like this??
“I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
Even…bite my tongue…sit on my fists…represent Christ…and give thanks…that’s what He’s telling me…
But…the times we do it…the times that we press into not-wanting-to-give-thanks-but-do-it-anyway-because-He-is-worthy…we find that Healing Balm for our hearts comes in the unlikely jar labeled “Thankfulness.” Our worst-days-ever can be turned into beautiful days when we sink our souls into songs of praise. Instead of sinking into darkness.
Because here is where we remember and find again that we have this hope beyond what we can see…and “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.” (Hebrews 6:19) We remember that God is our resting place…the resting place for our weary and anxious souls. We remember that in Him alone we find Peace and are FULLY LOVED…and He reminds us that He knows and He sees. He offers us His shoulder to cry on and His wings to hide under. We crawl into bed and He sings us to sleep.
He holds us together…and when we offer thanks and praise to Him…especially when we don’t feel like it…our broken days He glues together into a mosaic of beauty to glorify Him.
- Are you giving thanks in the Most Unlikely Places?
Father…just…Thank You. Thank You for the blood of Jesus that covers my sins. Thank You for being the glue that holds me together. Thank You for showing me that Thanks and Praise to You is healing to my soul. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on You alone and NOT on my circumstances. Thank You for being my Light in the darkness. In the Strong Name of Jesus…Amen.
“Let the Word of Christ richly dwell within you…”
