Precious Longing

Good morning!!

“The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.  I opened my mouth wide and panted, for I longed for Your commandments.”

Psalm 119:130-131

  • Do I open the Word of God panting for Him?  Longing for Him to meet me?
  • Do I open His Word and expect Him to show up and give me better understanding of His Word…of Him?

Some time ago I was reading this verse, and decided to look up the word “unfolding.”  What I found was amazing (to me, at least!!)  When we ask Him to “Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law” (Psalm 119:18), He does just that…He opens our eyes and shows us wonderful things!!

I already loved the word “unfolding”…but the beauty of it went even deeper as I searched and found the meaning.

Unfolding- opening, entrance, doorway

The opening of Your words gives light…

The entrance of Your words gives light…

The doorway of Your words gives light…

Doorway to Light3

His Word enters our heart and gives light

His Word is the doorway to knowing more of His heart…the doorway to Truth…the doorway to Life in Him…in Jesus

The doorway of Your words…let me enter this place…

John 1:1-4 says “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

Jesus is the Word…in Jesus is life…Jesus is the Light of men.  His Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

I looked up the meaning of comprehend in this verse and found this definition…to lay hold of, seize.

The darkness can not lay hold of or seize the Light of Christ!!  Jesus has overcome the darkness!!  This is the Light that He shines in and through us, through His Spirit in us, when we meet Him in His Word!  The unfolding of Your words gives light…the Light that gives us understanding…the Light that cannot be overcome by darkness.  It cannot be seized by the darkness.

Jesus is the doorway…the doorway to Life, Life abundant and eternal.  “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”

We cannot take the opening of His Word lightly!  It is not just a book to gain knowledge or debate over.  We can’t just read it to check it off of our list of things to do for the day.  The Word of God is the doorway to Truth.  To Life.  To Light in our darkness.

I asked these at the beginning, and I want us to think about it again…

  • Do I open the Word of God panting for Him?  Longing for Him to meet me?
  • Do I open His Word and expect Him to show up and give me better understanding of His Word…of Him?

And I’ll add these thoughts…

  • Do I view God’s Word as the doorway to Truth…to Life…to Light?  Or is reading the Bible merely a routine, a check on my to-do list?

I pray that we would have the same view of God’s Word as the Psalmist when he said…

“How sweet are Your words to my taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”

Psalm 119:103

I pray that we would consider these words as we open the precious pages of His Word…that…the unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”

One more “wordy” thing…I looked up the meaning of “gives light”…and found “makes a fire”…”makes to shine.”  The Light of His Word…through the Spirit of the Living God…will make a fire in our heart and cause us to shine the Light of His glory into the darkness around us. Which is why we are here, to bring Him glory.

I pray that we would come into His Presence panting, mouth open wide, longing for Him to meet us.  Psalm 81:10 says

“Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.”

And He will.

Father, Your Word is Truth and Life and shines Light into every dark place…and the darkness cannot seize Your Light!  You have given us Your Word as the doorway to relationship with You.  Let us stop taking this privilege so lightly…let us savor each minute that we can spend in Your Word, and engrave what we read into our hearts.  We come to You hungry and longing to meet with You, and we trust that You alone will fill us.  In Jesus’ name,  Amen.

Blessings!

“Let the Word of Christ richly dwell within you…”

Colossians 3:16a
